The big perk about fibre-optic is that it doesn't get slower the further you move away from the exchange, unlike the copper wires that carry regular broadband. The result? You'll actually get the speed quoted.
Read the results of Ofcom's speed report (click "Twice as fast as BT, Sky and the rest") - Virgin Media is shown to deliver the best speed.
Due to the copious amount of bandwidth students use, we only ever recommend going on an unlimited plan if you're sharing with housemates. Virgin Media may slow your connection down a bit if you go absolutely nuts, but there isn't a small print download limit that cuts you off if you download over a few gigabytes.
Wireless n is the fastest consumer wireless standard available today, and you get a wireless n compatible box with all Virgin broadband. On O2, wireless N is only available on their Pro package, and the Sky one seems to be 802.11g.
At time of writing, the 10Mbit Virgin Media package is only £1.72 per month more expensive than the cheapest available broadband. Times 12, divided by, say, 5 housemates - that's only £4 each - worth it for decent broadband.
